As someone who writes about food-related products for a living, my (tiny single-cabinet) pantry is as full as you might imagine. I have more types of vinegar than I can count on both hands, an absurd amount of bone broth, and way too many spices buried in the back of my cupboard, long past their prime.

But the one pantry staple I’ll never complain about having a surplus of is olive oil. It’s right up there with kosher salt as one of the most reached-for ingredients in my kitchen. I use it to cook dinner every night, in the salad dressings I prep for work, in citrus-scented snacking cakes. I even drizzle the really good stuff over vanilla ice cream sometimes (if you haven’t tried it, you must).

Wonder Valley was started in 2014 by husband-and-wife duo Jay and Alison Carroll. It’s named for a rural stretch of land in the Mojave Desert near Joshua Tree where the team is based, but the olive oil operations themselves take place in Lake County, Northern California. The brand prides itself on producing certified extra virgin oils made from olives that are harvested very young.

What subscription options are available? Wonder Valley offers subscriptions for all its products, including its skin, body, and haircare lines. For olive oil specifically, there are two options. The first is a standard subscription, where you choose between the classic Olive Oil or the limited-edition Olio Nuevo, a first pressing. You can then select to receive one, two, or four bottles every one, two, or three months.

Are you a true olive oil fiend? Then go for the brand’s Oil Club. For a flat rate of $200, you’ll receive four quarterly shipments of very fresh olive oil that each come with a surprise gift (like new Wonder Valley releases or pantry staples from other beloved brands like Tart Vinegar or Diaspora Co.). The Oil Club also grants you a 20% discount code on any other Wonder Valley purchases you make while you’re a member.

What Alaina loved: For starters, Wonder Valley’s olive oils are beautiful. The packaging is aesthetic, and the matte coating on the glass bottles isn’t just there for looks—it helps protect the oil inside from sunlight, which in turn extends its shelf life.

I tried both the regular olive oil and the Olio Nuevo, both of which were delicious. I was drawn to the fruity, ultra peppery notes of the Olio Nuevo, which features a blend of Leccino, Frantoio, Pendolino, and Manzanilla olives. This is the kind of stuff you set out at a dinner party with big hunks of fresh, crusty bread for dipping (the ultimate hack for tiding your guests over when dinner’s running behind schedule). The Olive Oil is milder, a great all-arounder better suited for your sautés, salad dressings, or cake batters.

What we’d leave: My only real gripe with Wonder Valley is the price. At $34 or $36 (at the subscription price) for a 375-ml bottle, this is one of the pricier olive oil subscriptions out there. That said, I do think it’s well worth it for the quality you get.

Corto is a California olive oil company dedicated to harvesting olives at their peak and preserving their freshness through the entire oil production process. They have a range of product offerings, including 100% extra virgin olive oil, a sauté oil blend, a Calabrian chili olive oil, and a Chef’s Essentials kit featuring Stanislaus Piccolo Datterini baby plum tomatoes.

What subscription options are available? You can purchase the Truly Extra Virgin Olive Oil in a single 500-ml bottle, a twin pack (two 500-ml bottles), or a 3-L Pantry Size FlavorLock Box (it has a spout, like boxed wine!). Everything in Corto's online shop is available for a one-time purchase, or you can subscribe to receive your selection every two, three, or six months. After you set up your subscription, you can log into your Corto account to skip a shipment, adjust the quantity, or cancel anytime. You can also send any item as a one-time gift.

You can also pay a flat fee to subscribe to Club Corto, the brand’s membership. There are two options here: The Classic Collection, which gives you two shipments per year that each include two Truly 500-ml bottles and one 3-L FlavorLock Box, or the Pantry Collection, which is three shipments with one 3-L FlavorLock Box each. What Emily loved: Corto's Truly Extra Virgin Olive Oil is rich, fresh, and earthy with a nice bite on the back of the tongue, but it lacks the punch-you-in-the-face olive oil brightness some people (my kids included) find off-putting. My oil shipped with a card letting me know it was from a "fresh fall harvest," and I didn't have to assume which fall because a date stamp on the back of the bottle confirmed the olives were harvested within the last six months. I loved using this in a simple balsamic vinaigrette, and I dipped quite a bit of Italian bread in it too. I'm eager to try it in an olive oil cake next. Because it's relatively affordable and doesn't have an overpowering olive flavor, it's also a good option for an everyday cooking oil. I'd recommend this for any home cook who never wants to worry about having fresh, high-quality olive oil on hand.

What we’d leave: There are no real cons here, unless what you’re looking for is something super punchy.

What we loved: Flamingo Estate’s Heritage Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a great middle ground for people looking for an oil with gorgeous grassy notes and a balanced peppery kick, without being so assertive that it’s only applicable for certain uses. I thoroughly enjoyed dipping hunks of bread into it, but it would be equally welcome in an olive oil cake, salad dressing, or roasted veg side dish. I also appreciate that the brand lists the harvest date on their website.

Garlic lovers, you’ll want to turn your attention to the limited edition oil made from the winter 2025 harvest. Infused with oil extracted from artichoke garlic, it packs a punch and tastes incredibly fresh—more like true, raw garlic cloves than a garlic powder. Use this one to finish soups, toss with pasta, or on a cheese board with fresh bread.

What we’d leave: There's not much to complain about here other than the fact that Flamingo Estate's olive oil is on the pricier side.

Founded in 2018, Brightland is a woman-owned company making olive oils, vinegars, and honeys in California. Their cold-pressed extra virgin olive oils and infused olive oils are made from olives grown on family-run farms in CA’s Central Coast and Valley.

What subscription options are available? All of Brightland’s products are available by subscription. The brand currently offers 10 olive oils: four extra virgin varieties in different intensities and six flavored options. The brand just launched two squeezable bottles: an Everyday Salad Oil and an Everyday Cooking Oil. There are also a few sets that combine multiple oils.

What Kate loved: Brightland wins points in my book for its beautiful, minimalist bottles. It also helps that the brand's extra virgin olive oils and vinegars are some of the best I’ve ever tried. The Brightland Subscription features their best-selling oil duo of Awake and Alive, both made from cold-pressed olives grown at family farms in California. The Awake has a bolder flavor profile and is the better of the two for cooking, while the Alive is smoother and plays well in salad dressings and baking. I like that the subscription gives you a choice between receiving your oil restock once every one, two, or three months for the flexibility it affords you, and I appreciate that subscriptions come with free shipping.

What we’d leave: While the two varieties of olive oil—each with their own use cases—are one of the selling points of Brightland’s Duo subscription, some might find it difficult to work through that much oil in three months (especially those who live alone). That said, if this is you, know that Brightland also offers subscriptions for single bottles of the Awake or Alive oils. We’d recommend trying both before settling on a favorite.

California Olive Ranch has been producing extra virgin olive oil since 1998, long before many of the companies on this list. You may have seen them on shelves at your local grocery store, which would make sense: They’re California’s largest grower of olives for extra virgin olive oil.

What subscription options are available? You can set up a recurring subscription on any product from the company’s catalogue for either 30 or 60 days.

What Wilder loved: California Olive Ranch checks all the right boxes when it comes to transparency. Each bottle lists the harvest date and clearly states the place of origin. In addition to their California oils, they also produce Mediterranean blends made with oils imported from other regions.

The EVOO I tested came well-packaged a couple days after ordering. It had a mild peppery grassy hit, but was definitely more on the subtle side making it a good all-purpose oil. There was no trace of that "crayon" smell that indicates olive oil that's gone rancid.

This is an oil I regularly buy for everyday cooking, so the 10% off with a subscription is a nice bonus. It’s a great pick for people who use a lot of olive oil and want to get something domestic that’s on the less expensive side compared to some other options on this list.

What we’d leave: Nothing, really! This is a straightforward subscription that saves you a couple bucks on a quality product you’ll use every day.

What Abbey loved: Call me shallow, but I love the look of these bottles. The chic blue and white bottles bring Santorini vibes to your counter or table setting.

I tried the Original Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which is recommended for dressing and finishing, and the Everyday Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which the brand says is better suited for cooking and grilling. Both have a tasty, olivey brine, and the Original version has an extra punch of pepperiness that makes it a good choice for dipping bread (I tried it with some fresh focaccia from Épicerie Boulud and it was *chef’s kiss*).

I also appreciate that you can purchase a refill kit that includes a 3-L tin of olive oil to replenish your bottle. As a nice touch, a funnel is included for easy pouring.

What we’d leave: The Everyday variety is $25 a bottle ($22 if you subscribe), which is more than you really need to pay for a cooking olive oil.

Pompeian is another brand you probably recognize from your local grocery store shelves. The company’s history dates back over 100 years, originating in Lucca, Italy, before being sold to American Nathan Musher in 1906. The company has since changed hands a few times, but its commitment to producing quality olive oil for everyday cooking remains the same.

What subscription options are available? You can buy Pompeian on Amazon, where a subscription is available as part of the retailer’s “subscribe and save” option.

What Abbey loved: I sampled Pompeian’s Organic Smooth and Robust varieties, and found both to have a mellow taste that doesn’t distract from the flavors in the dish you’re cooking. At $10 for a 24 fl oz bottle, the price is right for an everyday cooking oil. But if you’re looking for a bolder flavor to accompany your bread basket or drizzle over veggies, other options on this list bring more originality to the table.

What we’d leave: When I sampled it on a piece of bread, the Robust variety had a viscous texture that coated my mouth.

Enzo’s Table is a family owned company that makes a range of pantry ingredients such as balsamic vinegar, nut butters, and oils. They use olives grown from their own estate in California's San Joaquin Valley to produce their olive oils, of which there are nine types: unflavored extra virgin in three different levels of intensity, plus six different flavored options ranging from Fresno Chili to Clementine Crush.

What subscription options are available? You can order any of Enzo’s Table’s olive oils (of which there are a whopping nine) in either a 250 or 500-ml size, and at a monthly or bimonthly frequency.

What Wilder loved: I think the oils from Enzo’s Table are great all-purpose or condiment oils. Their bold oil doesn't have a blow-your-socks-off intensity, but it has a nice bright flavor that is perfect for drizzling over soups and sliced tomatoes.

Where I really think the brand excels is with their infusions. Infused olive oils often taste artificial and can be overpowering, but Enzo's oils taste natural and complement the flavors in a dish. The Meyer lemon oil is great either in salad dressings or in an olive oil cake, and my roommate and I use the Fresno chili oil in pretty much everything—it has a really satisfying heat to it. If you use olive oil as a condiment for dunking or drizzling and appreciate a flavored option, this is a great brand to try.

What we’d leave: Serious olive oil aficionados may find these ones lack some of the punch they’re seeking.

What to look for in an olive oil subscription

One of the most important things to look for when choosing olive oil—subscription or not—is a clearly listed harvest date. Ideally, it’s printed on the bottle, but some brands include it on the product page online. This is the best way to make sure you’re getting oil made from the most recent harvest—in other words, the freshest stuff money can buy.

Flexibility is also an important quality for an olive oil subscription (and a subscription of any kind, for that matter). Can you choose between different quantities and frequencies? How easy is it to pause or cancel your membership? These are all good things to investigate before signing up.

What’s the best way to store olive oil?

Heat and light are two of olive oil’s enemies, which is why most olive oil bottles you’ll see are dark or opaque. Store your stash in a dark cupboard away from the oven or windows to keep it from going rancid.

How long does olive oil last?

Even when stored properly, olive oil won’t last forever. Unopened, it should last about two years after the harvest date. But once you’ve opened a bottle, you’ve exposed it to oxygen and light, so the clock is ticking. California Olive Ranch recommends using it up within three to six months. If you’re cooking for a small household and don’t go through oil that quickly, consider buying smaller bottles that you can work through in a reasonable amount of time.
